Project Evaluation

I have decided previously that my evaluation of the project would be to interview people and ask them about my project. I have interviewed Rebekah, Khaliun and my brother Tadas for my evaluation.

I asked If they think that the idea for the new toilet is useful in the Ger district and why.
Khaliun said that it is useful, but maybe not so much for the Ger district because of the cost. Rebekah said that if they would be used frequently then there would be too much fertilizer. Tadas said that some people would not like to use public toilets especially in the winter.

My second question was asking if they would use these toilets.
Khaliun said that public toilets get ruined fast. Rebekah would use these toilets because she thinks they're clean. Tadas said that he would use them if they would be near his house and easy to get to.

My last question was asking if they think that people in the Ger district think that the idea is useful and if they would use these toilets.
Khaliun thinks they would use this toilet because its Eco friendly and the waste isn't useless. Rebekah thinks that the people would use it and they would like it. My brother said that they would like it and use the toilets if they think that they are better than their dirt holes.

In conclusion, I have found that people in the Ger district would use these toilets if they would be easy to get to and easy to use. They would also use them if they would find them useful.

Changes to Project

While I was doing my project, I ran into allot of problems. One of them was that the glue needed 24 hours to dry. To replace this glue i used super glue. It dried instantly. The problem with this glue is that if you get it on your clothes it wont come out. If you get it on your skin and fingers, then it will glue your skin together and later the skin is like an alligators. If you get it on the floor, it will take a long time to scrub it off. Another thing that was difficult was bending the sewage pipe. Because its plastic, I heated it on the stove and it bent easily. Because I wanted to show how the pipe would look underground, I had to raise the toilet house and the crop fields higher. To raise those up, I needed to saw wooden chopsticks. My brother helped me do that because it was getting to difficult. Because of me forgetting to take the clay from the class, I used flour, water and glue to make my own clay for the toilet itself and for the water reserve. It worked fine. To show the crop field, I needed some kind of holder for the soil and plants. I made an aluminum foil holder and glued it on the raised platform. Then I poured the soil onto it and added the plants.

Process of Project

#1 What steps did you take to make your product, from beginning to end?
First,I put all the materials in one place so I wouldn't loose them.
Then, I cut out a big platform out of cardboard.
After that, I cut the chopsticks and glued them on the cardboard.
After gluing the chopsticks on, I glued the platform on top.
Later, I glued the wooden blocks on and glued the second platform on.
Then, I heated the pipe, bent it, and sawed it.
I glued the pipe on the cardboard and started to cut out cardboard pieces for the water reserve and the toilet house.
I built the water reserve on the platform. I also built the toilet house.
After that, I made dough, from flour, water and glue. I made a little ball and made a hole in it and put it in the toilet house.
I also used the rest of the dough to put in the reserve and painted the walls and the dough blue to symbolize water.
Then I printed out the labels to show what is what.

#2 What went well?
The super glue worked well and dried quickly. The chopsticks didn't fall apart and nothing fell off after drying.

#3 What went wrong and how did you fix it?
The strong glue didn't work so I replaced it with super glue.

#4 If you had it to do over again, what would you do?
I would know what glue to use and I also would get the materials earlier and would also use clay and not waste time to make my own dough.

Comparing Sketches to Design Specifications

#1 Compare each sketch to the design specifications.

Plan 1: This design might not be very useful because of the dirt hole. When all the excrement piles up in the ground hole, it slowly decomposes. But where does it go? It goes to the groundwater. That might even make the contamination of the water much bigger. Also, the ground hole takes alot of space, and it might be a problem to dig by hand. To get an excavator up the ger district might be another problem.

Plan 2: The second design includes the excrement entering the local river. This might not be a good idea because it might take too many pipes to lead all of the waste to the river. Although leading the excrement to the river, which in any case is not being drunk from, might be a better idea.

Plan 3: The third design involves the excrement piling up in a closed septic tank and later, fertilizing the crop fields. This idea might be more expensive because of the septic tank. But this is more useful than the other ideas. The excrement does not go into the groundwater because it is below the crop fields in the ground. The extra excrement is kept in the septic tank until needed. This idea is the most useful.
